The Black River Correctional Center (BRCC) in Jackson County accommodates 114 adult male inmates and is dedicated to evidence-based practices (EBP) for effective intervention strategies. The center offers the Earned Release Program (ERP), aligned with Wisconsin State Statutes, emphasizing core curriculums like Thinking for a Change and Cognitive Behavioral Interventions for Substance Abuse. This abstinence-based program spans about six months and prioritizes community reentry, involving Division of Community Corrections agents in release planning.
BRCC provides a range of ancillary programs alongside ERP, such as Social Skills, Anger Management, and Family Reunification, aiming to support inmates' successful reintegration into society. Additionally, the center engages inmates in community service through the BRCC Project Crew, fostering positive work experiences and skill-building opportunities.
Originally established as a correctional camp for boys in 1962, BRCC evolved into an adult male facility in 1972. Its focus shifted from a "military bearing" program to the low-risk ERP in 2014. As part of Wisconsin's Correctional Center System, BRCC operates within a network of 14 correctional centers overseen by a central warden office in Madison.
Inmates at BRCC are required to participate in programming, work-related activities, and community service projects. They also have access to educational opportunities, including High School Equivalency Diploma programs and vocational training in various fields like auto maintenance and culinary arts.
Pre-release planning at BRCC aims to assist inmates in transitioning back into society by providing individualized support, establishing post-release residency and employment plans, and facilitating positive connections with support systems. Additionally, the CorrLinks system enables electronic communication between inmates and their contacts, offering a means to maintain connections during incarceration.
Overall, BRCC's commitment to evidence-based practices, comprehensive programming, and community engagement underscores its mission to promote successful reintegration and reduce recidivism among its inmate population.
BRCC maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
