Jackson Correctional Institution (JCI) is a medium-security adult prison established in 1996 as part of a $145.4 million building program aimed at addressing the state's growing prison population. Initially designed to accommodate 1,684 beds, JCI began with a 150-bed barracks-style unit and expanded in 1997. The facility's mission prioritizes public safety, staff, and inmate welfare while fostering accountability and opportunities for positive change to facilitate successful community reintegration. Educational offerings include adult basic education, literacy, GED classes, and college correspondence courses. Inmates can access vocational training in cabinetry, construction, barbering, graphic arts, painting, and masonry. Various programs focus on re-entry, parenting, and addressing substance abuse issues, aligning to guide inmates toward necessary life changes. Pre-release planning supports inmates' transition back into society, emphasizing individualized release plans, connections with support systems, and post-release employment or educational opportunities.
