Presently, it houses approximately 1,016 offenders and comprises two housing units, each containing 500 cells, along with a 50-bed segregation unit. Vocational training is provided in horticulture, with certification opportunities in commercial baking. Moreover, the institution facilitates correspondence courses to enable offenders to pursue post-secondary education. NLCI's participation in the Badger State Industries program offers inmates work assignments, including hydro-stripping operations, which involve repairing and remanufacturing signs for highway use. Additionally, inmates can engage in janitorial services, maintenance, and tutoring roles within the institution.

NLCI prioritizes the safety and security of the public, staff, and offenders, fostering a constructive environment that encourages accountability and positive decision-making. Emphasis is placed on goal-setting conducive to successful reentry into society, with a focus on rehabilitation and personal development. Construction of NLCI commenced in 2001 and was completed the following year.
