The Southwestern Regional Jail is a low/medium-security detention center located at 1300 Gaston Caperton Dr Holden, WV which is operated locally by the Boone Regional Authority and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates have been here for less than five years. Southwestern Regional Jail accepts inmates from the Boone County Sheriff's arrests and surrounding towns, Holden Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. The Southwestern Regional Jail sits high atop one of the picturesque mountains of Southern West Virginia. Located in Holden, West Virginia, this facility is the sixth of ten regional jails to be built in the State. The facility, which started receiving inmates on April 8, 1998, has a podular design, consisting of three pods housing approximately one hundred inmates each with an upgradeable maximum capacity of five hundred, for both male and female inmates. This regional jail serves a three-county area consisting of Boone, Logan, and Mingo counties. In addition, the facility contains a separate computerized booking area, state-of-the-art, closed-circuit “Courtroom of the Future,” a 24-hour medical unit, a full-time teacher, a counseling staff, and much more. This facility is staffed with 81 uniformed correctional officers and approximately 25 non-uniformed personnel.
