Tuberculosis testing is standard at intake in most county jails. STD testing is not.

There is no routine screening protocol for sexually transmitted diseases in county jail settings. If a specific incident occurs or an inmate presents with symptoms that warrant medical attention, a provider can order testing and treatment on a case-by-case basis. HIV testing may be conducted under those circumstances. Other STDs such as herpes, which can remain latent without obvious symptoms, are generally not part of the standard medical workup in a jail environment.

State prison systems vary more than county jails on this. Some state departments of corrections have more comprehensive intake health screening that includes STD testing, particularly for HIV and hepatitis. County jails, which typically house people for shorter periods while awaiting trial or serving misdemeanor sentences, operate with more limited medical infrastructure and shorter timelines.

If there is a specific health concern about someone entering custody, the most direct approach is to have them communicate that concern to the facility's medical staff at intake. Inmates have the right to request medical attention, and a documented health concern is more likely to receive attention than an unspoken one.
