Best Books to Prepare Someone for Jail or Prison

I am looking for the best book to send to an inmate that will help know what to expect in jail/prison. What to do and what not to do, say and what not to say sort of things. Do you know of one?

It is a reasonable thing to want. Someone heading into jail or prison for the first time is walking into an environment with its own rules, culture, and unwritten codes, and getting it wrong in the first few weeks can create problems that follow an inmate for their entire sentence.

The honest answer is that most books on this topic are not very good. The ones that do exist tend to be dated, and many carry a tone of resentment or score-settling that bleeds into the advice. That bitterness might be understandable from the author's perspective, but it is not useful to someone trying to navigate the system with a clear head. Prison has also changed significantly over the years, and advice that was accurate ten years ago may not reflect how things actually work today.

What we have found more valuable than any book is current, firsthand guidance from people who have recently been through it. InmateAid has built out a substantial library of practical content in the Pre-InmateAid section of the site covering what to expect before, during, and after incarceration. It is worth reading thoroughly before your loved one reports.

For those who want to go deeper, InmateAid has also made a select group of former inmates available for one-on-one counseling sessions. These are people who have been through the federal system recently and are willing to speak candidly about all of it, including the things most people are too embarrassed or afraid to ask. No question is off limits. If you are serious about preparing someone for what is ahead, that kind of direct conversation is more valuable than anything you will find in print.
