Can inmates change their visitor list

My boyfriend is in the city jail and has a list of approved visitors. If a friend not on that list wants to visit, is he able to make changes to this list? Could his friend come with an approved person to visit?

In most city and county jails, inmates are allowed to update their approved visitor list, but it is not always immediate and must follow the facility’s process.

Your boyfriend can usually request to add or remove people from his list by submitting a form or making the change through his counselor or classification officer. Some facilities allow updates regularly, while others only allow changes during certain time periods.

If someone is not on the approved list, they will not be allowed to visit, even if they come with someone who is approved. Each visitor must be individually cleared before being granted access.

The best steps are:

  • Have your boyfriend add the friend to his list as soon as possible
  • Make sure the friend completes any required application or approval process
  • Wait for confirmation before attempting to visit

Until the person is officially approved, the facility will turn them away.
