Can Inmates in Segregation Call or Receive Visits?

I have a friend that got sent to seg. Will he be able to call? Will I be able to see him? If he can call how long will be?

Both phone access and visitation get significantly restricted when someone is placed in segregation, but the specifics depend on why they are there.

On the phone side, inmates in seg are typically limited to one 15-minute call per week. That is the standard across most federal and state facilities and it applies whether the placement is administrative or disciplinary in nature. However, if the reason for the segregation placement is a disciplinary infraction and a phone restriction was issued as part of the punishment, even that one weekly call can be taken away entirely. A phone restriction is a separate consequence that can be layered on top of the standard seg limitations, leaving the inmate with no phone access at all until the restriction is lifted.

Visitation in segregation is a different animal from general population visits under the best circumstances. Most facilities either suspend visitation entirely during a seg placement or limit it to non-contact visits through a partition rather than the standard visitation setting. Administrative segregation, which is used for protective custody or pending investigation, sometimes allows more visitation flexibility than disciplinary segregation, where privileges are pulled as part of the punishment.

The length of the seg placement also matters. A short-term placement pending an investigation might resolve quickly and restore normal privileges within days. A longer disciplinary stint can mean weeks or months of restricted access.

The fastest way to find out exactly what restrictions are in place is to contact the facility directly and ask to speak with someone in his unit or his case manager. They can tell you whether a phone restriction is active and what the current visitation policy is for his housing status.
