Can inmates in the SHU receive and send mail or care packs?

Is someone in the "SHU" allowed to receive and send mail, and what about sending them care packages also?

Mail access is one of the privileges that generally survives a SHU placement, even when most other privileges get pulled. Inmates in the Special Housing Unit can typically both receive and send mail, though the process moves more slowly and with more scrutiny than in the general population.

Incoming mail to a SHU inmate goes through the same mailroom screening process as any other incoming mail at the facility, but it may take longer to reach the inmate because delivery to segregation units operates on a different schedule than general population mail runs. Do not interpret a delay in response as a sign that mail is not getting through. The inmate may simply have less immediate access to writing materials or outgoing mail collection.

Outgoing mail from the SHU is permitted in most facilities. Inmates can request paper, envelopes, and writing materials through staff, though access to those supplies may be more limited than in the general population, where commissary purchases are easier to make.

Care packages are a different matter entirely. Most facilities restrict or eliminate care package access for SHU inmates. The ability to receive packages from outside vendors is typically considered a privilege that gets suspended during a SHU placement alongside commissary access, recreation, and programming. Some facilities make exceptions for essential hygiene items but the general posture toward packages in segregation is restrictive.

If your loved one is in the SHU the best thing you can do is keep writing. Letters and cards get through in most cases and they matter more in segregation than anywhere else inside. The isolation of the SHU makes outside contact feel more valuable not less and knowing someone on the outside is thinking of them carries real weight during what is almost always a difficult stretch.
