Do local numbers make inmate calls cheaper
I heard if you get another phone number with the area code of the phone service company the jail uses it will make the calls cheaper. Is that correct and if so how do you go about doing that?
Sometimes yes, but it depends entirely on the facility and the phone provider they use.
Years ago, getting a local number in the same area code as the prison often lowered the cost because calls were billed as local instead of long distance. That still works in some places, but the industry has changed a lot. Today, there are dozens of providers, and many no longer price calls strictly based on distance.
In some systems:
- Local numbers can still reduce the per minute rate
- In others, there is little to no difference
- Some providers even charge more for certain “local” routing setups
That is why there is no one size fits all answer.
What we do with the InmateAid Discount Telephone Service is match a local number to the facility’s rate center when it actually creates savings. If it will not save you money, we will tell you upfront so you do not waste time or money setting it up.
Here is how to approach it:
- Identify the facility and the phone carrier they use
- Compare the cost of calls to your current number versus a local number
- Consider using a service like InmateAid to test and optimize the setup
Keep in mind:
- You still need to fund the account with the facility’s phone provider
- The inmate must add and get approval for any new number
- Savings vary widely depending on the location and carrier
If you want a clear answer for your situation, send us your phone number and the facility name, and we can give you a realistic estimate of what, if anything, you will save.
