Generally, no, and in practice, older inmates tend to have some of the smoothest experiences inside.

There is an unwritten respect that exists in prison culture toward older inmates that outsiders rarely hear about. Younger inmates typically leave older people alone. An older inmate who carries themselves with dignity, minds their own business, and does not insert themselves into conflicts that have nothing to do with them is almost universally left in peace. The prison yard has its own social logic and a quiet older inmate does not register as a threat or a target to anyone.

Physically, facilities do make accommodations for age and health. Older inmates are not expected to perform at the same level as younger ones in work assignments and medical needs are supposed to be addressed through the facility's health services department. Whether that care is adequate is a separate conversation, but the expectation of keeping up physically with a 25-year-old is not something an older inmate faces.

Where older inmates can run into trouble is the same place anyone does inside. Antagonizing other inmates, disrespecting people, or inserting themselves into situations that do not involve them erases whatever goodwill their age would otherwise buy them. The respect extended to older inmates is conditional on them not being a source of conflict.

The best thing you can do for an older loved one serving time is keep them connected and mentally engaged. Send books, magazines, and letters regularly. Reading material is one of the most valuable things an older inmate can have. It passes time, keeps the mind active, and provides a connection to the world outside that makes the days more bearable.
