How can I find out if my inmate was sent to SHU?

Asked by Kathy · January 5, 2025 · 1 answer

The Special Housing Unit (SHU), often referred to as "the hole," is a segregated area within a correctional facility where inmates are placed for disciplinary reasons, administrative segregation, or protective custody. Inmates in the SHU experience more restrictive conditions, including limited contact with other inmates and reduced privileges.

If you suspect that your loved one has been sent to the SHU, the best course of action is to contact the facility directly. Ask to speak with the inmate's case manager or counselor, as they are typically responsible for handling inmate assignments and can provide information regarding the inmate’s status. Be prepared to provide the inmate's full name and identification number for verification purposes. Depending on the facility's policies, you may be informed of the reason and expected duration of their placement in the SHU
