Finding out why someone is in jail is more straightforward than most families expect, and there are several ways to get that information depending on how recently the arrest occurred and where they are being held.
Call the facility directly. The jail where your son is being held can confirm that he is in their system and in most cases can tell you the charges he is being held on. Have his full legal name and date of birth ready when you call. Booking information including charges is generally public record.
Search the county jail's online inmate roster. Most county jails maintain a publicly searchable inmate roster on their website that includes the charges associated with each booking. Search your county's sheriff's office or jail website and look for an inmate search or booking search tool.
Check the court records. Once charges have been formally filed, they appear in the court record. The Clerk of the Court in the county where the arrest took place can tell you what charges have been filed and what court dates are scheduled. Many counties also have online court record search tools that are publicly accessible.
Contact the arresting agency. If you know which law enforcement agency made the arrest, whether it was city police, county sheriff, or state police, they can often tell you the basis for the arrest and what charges were filed.
Ask your son directly. Once he has phone access, the most direct answer comes from him. In the meantime, the booking record at the jail is the fastest official source.
