Once a reentry program or class is completed, the credit calculation is not handled at the facility level. It goes to the Bureau of Prisons regional or central office for processing, which adds time to the timeline that many families and inmates do not anticipate.

The typical range is anywhere from a couple of weeks to more than a month before the credit is officially calculated, verified, and posted to the inmate's record. In some cases it takes longer if there are backlogs or if the paperwork from the facility needs to be reviewed and confirmed before the adjustment is made.

Your family member should confirm with their case manager that the program completion was properly documented and submitted for credit processing. If several weeks have passed without any update to the projected release date, following up with the case manager to check on the status of the submission is the right move. The credit does not post automatically without the completion paperwork being properly filed on the facility's end.
