The timeline between sentencing and transfer to a classification or reception center varies depending on whether the sentence is federal or state and how backed up the system is at the time.

For federal sentences, the Bureau of Prisons typically designates a facility within a few weeks of sentencing. Inmates who are self-surrendering are given a specific report date, usually four to six weeks after sentencing, and report directly to their designated facility rather than going through a separate classification center. Inmates who are already in custody at a county jail waiting on sentencing are usually transferred within a few weeks of the sentence being imposed, though the US Marshals Service transport schedule drives the actual timing and it can stretch longer depending on availability.

For state sentences, the process varies more widely. Some states move inmates from county jail to a reception and classification center within days of sentencing while others take several weeks depending on bed availability and transport scheduling. The county jail holds the inmate until the state is ready to receive them and that wait can feel indefinite from the inmate's perspective.

Once at the classification or reception center, the processing period typically runs between 30 and 90 days. That window covers medical screening, psychological evaluation, educational assessment, classification interviews, and the determination of custody level and permanent facility assignment. How quickly an individual moves through that process depends on how efficiently the center is running and whether any medical or administrative issues slow things down.

After classification is complete, the inmate is transferred to their permanent facility and the actual sentence begins in earnest with work assignments, programming, and a stable routine.
