How Long Will an Inmate Stay at a Florida Reception Center?

My cousin just got to South Florida Reception 8-11-15 he was transferred from Charlotte C I. Will he stay until his sentence is up or be released earlier than expected? He only had a three year sentence and I believe he has only been locked up a year.

A reception center in Florida, like South Florida Reception Center, is not a permanent placement. It is a classification and intake facility where newly arrived or transferred inmates are evaluated before being assigned to their permanent institution. Your cousin will be there temporarily, typically for a few weeks to a couple of months, before being designated to a facility that matches his custody level and program needs.

On the sentence calculation, Florida requires most inmates to serve 85 percent of their sentence. On a three-year sentence that is 36 months, 85 percent works out to approximately 30 months of actual time served before release.

If your cousin has already served about 12 months, he has roughly 18 months remaining under that calculation, assuming no loss of gain time due to disciplinary issues and no additional credits from program participation that might apply.

Florida's gain time system does allow for some reduction through program participation and good behavior, but the 85 percent floor is the baseline and significant reductions beyond that are uncommon in the Florida state system. The most accurate projected release date will come from his case manager once he is processed out of the reception center and placed at his permanent facility.
