The amount of time your loved one will actually serve depends on several factors including which system they are in, the nature of their sentence, and how they conduct themselves while incarcerated.

Federal sentences

Federal inmates are required to serve at least 85% of their sentence. There is no parole in the federal system. Good time credits can reduce a sentence by up to 54 days per year of sentence imposed, which accounts for the 15% reduction. Additional reductions are available through program participation under the First Step Act and through completion of RDAP which can reduce a sentence by up to 12 months for eligible inmates.

The Bureau of Prisons publishes each federal inmate's projected release date in their free online locator at bop.gov/inmateloc. Search by name or inmate ID number. That projected date already reflects standard good time credits applied.

State sentences

State sentences vary dramatically by state. Some states offer good time credits of up to 67% meaning an inmate serves only one third of their sentence with clean conduct. Others mirror the federal 15% reduction. The specific calculation depends entirely on which state your loved one is sentenced in.

Your loved one's case manager at the facility can provide the exact projected release date based on their sentence, earned credits, and current status. That is the most reliable source for a specific individual's timeline.

County jail sentences

County jail sentences are typically shorter and fixed. The facility can confirm the release date directly by phone in most cases.

What changes a release date

Release dates are not permanent. Good behavior and program participation can move a date earlier. Disciplinary infractions can push it back. Sentence modifications, appeals, or additional charges can also affect the timeline.

The most current and accurate release date for any federal inmate is always the BOP locator. For state inmates the relevant state Department of Corrections inmate search tool reflects the most current projected date.
