There are two reliable paths to getting accurate sentencing information for someone incarcerated in the Massachusetts Department of Corrections system.

The first is the Massachusetts DOC offender locator, which is a public-facing search tool available through the state's Executive Office of Public Safety and Security. You can search by name and the results typically include the facility, sentence information, and in many cases the offense of conviction. For someone currently housed at MCI Shirley that database should return a current record. The direct link is mass.gov and navigating to the DOC offender search from there gets you to the right place quickly.

The second path is the court where the case was originally heard. Criminal case records are public and the Judgment and Commitment order, which is the official document that spells out exactly what sentence was imposed, is on file with the clerk of court in that jurisdiction. You can call the clerk's office directly and ask to speak with someone who can help you access the case documents. In many cases you can get the information over the phone or request copies of the documents for a nominal printing fee.

If a life sentence was imposed that will appear in both the offender database and the court record. Life sentences in Massachusetts come in different forms, with and without the possibility of parole, and the court documents will specify which applies. That distinction matters enormously for understanding what the future actually looks like.

For a 22 year old asking questions about their father, having accurate information is far better than leaving those questions unanswered or relying on secondhand accounts that may be incomplete or wrong.
