Every inmate in the United States correctional system is assigned a unique ID number and you will need it for almost everything including sending money, sending mail, and setting up phone calls. Here is where to find it.
For federal inmates the BOP inmate ID number is an eight digit number formatted as XXXXX-XXX. You can find it by searching the Bureau of Prisons free inmate locator at bop.gov/inmateloc using the inmate's full name. The ID number appears in the search results alongside their current facility and projected release date.
For state inmates each state uses its own ID numbering system. Search your state's Department of Corrections inmate locator using the inmate's full name. The state ID number will appear in the results. InmateAid's facility directory links directly to each state's official search tool if you need help finding the right one.
For county jail inmates the booking number assigned at intake serves as their ID. Contact the jail directly or check their online inmate roster if available. Most counties list booking numbers alongside the inmate's name.
If you have already been in contact with your inmate the easiest way to get their ID number is simply to ask them directly during a call or visit. They will know their number by heart.
If you cannot locate your inmate through official databases InmateAid's free inmate search is an additional resource that may help you find both their location and their ID number.
