The information you can access depends on your relationship to the person and what specifically you are trying to find out.

Charges and case information. Criminal charges are public record in Illinois. The Jackson County Circuit Clerk's office maintains court records and can tell you what charges have been filed, upcoming court dates, and the status of the case. Many Illinois counties also have online court record search tools through the Illinois court system website at illinoiscourts.gov.

Sentence and release information. If the person has already been sentenced and is in the Illinois Department of Corrections system, the IDOC offender search at idoc.illinois.gov allows you to look up inmates by name and returns information including their facility, sentence length, and projected release date.

Health and welfare. This is the most restricted category. Facilities do not share medical information with anyone other than the inmate and in some cases their legal guardian. If you are a close family member and have a genuine welfare concern, calling the facility and asking to speak with the counselor or case manager assigned to that person is the right approach. Identify yourself, your relationship, and your specific concern. Family members generally get more cooperation than unrelated parties.

For Jackson County Jail specifically, call the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and ask to be directed to the jail's records department or the inmate's housing officer for basic status information.
