How to find my inmate’s release date

is there any way to figure out the release date of an inmate? can you call and ask the jail they're in or can they not tell you that information?

In many cases, an inmate’s release date is public information, but how easy it is to find depends on where they are incarcerated.

In many cases, an inmate’s release date is public information, but how easy it is to find depends on where they are incarcerated.

For federal inmates, release dates are usually available through the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator, which is the most consistent and reliable source.

For state and county inmates, it varies. Some states provide release dates through online databases or systems like VineLink, while others may only show limited information such as custody status. County jails are the least consistent, and many do not publish release dates online at all.

You can try calling the jail or prison directly, but be aware:

  • Some facilities will provide release dates over the phone
  • Others will not release that information for privacy or security reasons

If you do not have complete details, tools like InmateAid’s inmate search can help locate the correct facility and ID number. If you only have a name and need to narrow it down further, a service like TruthFinder can sometimes help identify the right individual before you begin your search.

If you have a specific inmate in mind and are having trouble finding accurate information, submitting a private inquiry through Ask the Inmate can help get more targeted guidance.
