Yes, there are several legitimate paths to sentence reduction and knowing about them can make a real difference in how much time someone actually serves.

Good Time Credit is the most common. Federal inmates who follow the rules and avoid disciplinary issues earn 54 days of good time credit per year under the First Step Act. That adds up over the course of a sentence and is the baseline most people count on.

The First Step Act opened additional doors beyond good time. Inmates who complete approved rehabilitative programming, including education, vocational training, and drug treatment through RDAP, can earn time credits that move them to prerelease custody or supervised release earlier than their projected date.

RDAP, the Residential Drug Abuse Program, is one of the most significant sentence reduction opportunities in the federal system. Eligible inmates who complete the program can receive up to 12 months off their sentence. Not everyone qualifies, but if there is a substance abuse history it is worth pursuing immediately upon arrival.

Compassionate Release is another avenue, typically reserved for serious medical conditions, elderly inmates, or extraordinary circumstances. It requires a formal motion and has a higher bar, but it is a real option in the right situation.

Sentence Modification through a 3582(c) motion can apply if the sentencing guidelines have changed since the original sentence was imposed and the change is retroactive.

The best starting point is connecting with the inmate's case manager at the facility to find out which programs he is eligible for and get enrolled as early as possible.
