The short answer is nothing. You cannot bring gifts directly to an inmate during a visit. It does not matter how small or harmless the item seems. Anything you try to bring in will be turned away at the door and depending on what it is could create problems for you and your loved one.

Most facilities will allow you to bring a small amount of cash for the vending machines in the visitation area. That is typically the only thing you are permitted to bring in and even that has limits. Check with the specific facility ahead of time to confirm how much cash is allowed and whether it needs to be in a specific form like coins or small bills.

If you want to do something meaningful for your brother, there are approved ways to help that do not involve showing up with anything in hand. Putting money on his commissary account is one of the most direct ways to improve his daily life inside. It gives him the ability to buy food, hygiene items, and other basics that make a real difference. Sending approved books or magazines through a publisher-direct service like Amazon is another option. Some facilities also allow care packages through approved vendors that specialize in prison-compliant products.
