Educational programs vary by facility type and system, but most prisons and jails offer some level of continuing education. The GED is the most universally available program across federal, state, and county facilities. Inmates who do not have a high school diploma are often encouraged or in some cases required to work toward it. Beyond the GED, many facilities offer vocational training programs that lead to certifiable trade skills in areas like plumbing, electrical work, HVAC, carpentry, welding, culinary arts, and computer technology, depending on the facility's resources.

Federal facilities generally have the most robust educational offerings in the system. The Bureau of Prisons operates a standardized education program at most institutions that includes literacy courses, GED preparation, vocational training, and in some cases, college-level courses through partnerships with accredited institutions. The First Step Act expanded access to evidence-based programming and provided additional incentives for inmates to participate in education and skills development.

State facilities vary considerably. Some states have invested heavily in prison education and partner with community colleges or universities to offer degree programs inside. Others offer more limited programming due to budget constraints. The best way to find out what is available at a specific facility is to have your family member ask their case manager or education department coordinator directly, or to call the facility and ask about their current program offerings.
