In a federal supermax setting, such as ADX Florence, solitary confinement is extremely restrictive, and daily life is very controlled.

Conditions and routine:
Inmates are typically confined to their cells for about 23 to 24 hours a day. Movement outside the cell is limited and done under strict supervision, often with restraints. Recreation time, if allowed, is usually alone in a secure area.

What they can receive:
Even in solitary, inmates are generally allowed:

  • Mail and letters
  • Photos (within facility guidelines)
  • Books, magazines, and newspapers sent from approved vendors
  • Limited commissary items, depending on their status

Communication and privileges:

  • Phone access is very limited, often around one short call per week
  • Showers and recreation are scheduled and restricted
  • All items and communication are closely monitored

What it is like:
The most difficult part for most inmates is the isolation. The lack of interaction and long periods alone can be mentally challenging.

Because of that, staying connected matters a lot. Sending letters, photos, and reading material can make a real difference. Books and magazines are especially valuable since they help pass time and keep the mind engaged during long hours in the cell.

While conditions are strict, inmates are still allowed basic forms of communication and personal items within the rules, and those connections become very important during this time.
