There is no single maximum. How much time can be reduced depends on the mechanism being used and what the inmate is willing to do.

For the average federal inmate focused on standard good time credits, the baseline reduction is 15 percent, roughly 54 days per year of sentence imposed, assuming a clean disciplinary record. Adding RDAP completion on top of that produces up to 12 additional months off the sentence. Those are the most accessible reductions available to most people in the federal system.

The largest reductions available, sometimes reaching 50 percent or more of the remaining sentence, come through substantial assistance to the government. When an inmate provides information that helps law enforcement solve or prosecute other crimes, prosecutors can file a motion under Rule 35 of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure requesting a sentence reduction. In significant cases, judges have reduced sentences dramatically, sometimes to time already served. The value of the information determines the size of the reduction, and there is no formal cap.

This route is not for everyone. It requires information valuable enough to interest prosecutors, a willingness to cooperate formally, and an understanding of the risks involved. Other inmates eventually learn who cooperated, and the social and safety consequences of that knowledge are real. Anyone considering this path needs to think carefully and have an attorney guiding the process from the beginning.

Compassionate release is another mechanism that can result in significant reduction for qualifying inmates with terminal illness or extraordinary circumstances, though the bar is high and the process is slow.
