Inmate Phone Calls

When Can an Inmate Make Phone Calls at Harford County Jail?

How long after being sentenced to 60 days in the Harford County jail in Maryland does an inmate have phone privileges. Do the numbers have to put on a call list etc?

County jails generally have a more straightforward phone access process than state or federal facilities.

County jails generally have a more straightforward phone access process than state or federal facilities. The primary requirement is that the inmate has money available on their account to cover the cost of the call. Once that is in place and the basic intake process is complete, which typically takes up to 24 hours, phone access is available during the facility's designated calling hours.

The call list question is worth clarifying. At many county facilities, inmates can dial any approved number without it needing to be pre-registered on a formal list. However, some county jails do require numbers to be added to an approved contact list before calls can be placed to them, and the process for adding numbers varies. Calling Harford County Detention Center directly and asking specifically whether outside numbers need to be pre-registered is the fastest way to confirm how their system works before you are waiting by the phone expecting a call that cannot go through.

For families on the outside, the most important immediate step is making sure funds are loaded onto the inmate's phone account through the facility's contracted carrier. At Harford County that is most likely through Securus or a similar provider. Getting that account funded before the first 24 hours are up means your inmate can call as soon as they are eligible rather than being delayed by an unfunded account.
