The information available about an inmate depends on what you are looking for and your relationship to them. Here is a practical guide to finding the most common types of information.

Current location and custody status. For federal inmates, the Bureau of Prisons inmate locator at bop.gov is the most accurate source. For state inmates, search your state's Department of Corrections inmate locator, which is available through the state DOC website. For county jail inmates, most county sheriff's offices maintain an online inmate roster searchable by name.

Charges and case information. Criminal charges and court proceedings are public record. The Clerk of the Court in the jurisdiction where the case was filed can provide the official case file including charges, plea agreements, verdicts, and sentencing documents. Federal cases are accessible through PACER at pacer.gov. Many state courts also have online record search tools.

Release date. The BOP locator includes projected release dates for federal inmates. State DOC locators often include this information as well. For county jail inmates, calling the facility directly is usually the most reliable approach.

Criminal history and background. Public records services like TruthFinder aggregate information from court records, law enforcement databases, and other public sources and can surface arrest history, charges, and convictions across multiple jurisdictions in one search.

Sex offender registry. If you need to know whether someone is a registered sex offender, every state maintains a publicly searchable registry through the state police or attorney general's website.

Welfare and day to day status. For information about how someone is doing inside, their assigned counselor or case manager at the facility is the right contact. Family members generally receive more cooperation than unrelated parties.

InmateAid's facility directory covers over 17,000 jails, prisons, and detention centers and can help you find contact information for any facility in the United States.
