If InmateAid is showing your inmate at a different facility than you expected, it is most likely because he has been transferred.

The federal Bureau of Prisons moves inmates regularly and often without much advance notice to families. Transfers happen for several reasons. The most common is a change in custody status, as an inmate's remaining sentence gets shorter, their security classification may be reduced, which can result in a move to a lower security facility. This is generally a positive development and often signals progress toward release.

Transfers can also occur in the other direction. Significant behavioral issues or multiple incident reports can result in a custody level increase, moving an inmate to a higher security facility.

It is worth noting that USP Tucson is the only federal prison that exclusively houses sex offenders. Inmates at that facility may be transferred to other institutions as their sentence progresses, their classification changes, or program needs shift. Families are not always notified directly when a transfer occurs.

Other reasons for transfer include program availability, medical needs, or population management across the federal system.

If your inmate has been transferred, update his location in your InmateAid profile to ensure your letters, postcards, and services reach the correct facility. You can verify his current location through the BOP Inmate Locator at bop.gov/inmateloc.
