It feels frustrating because it is frustrating. The system is built that way on purpose.

When someone is in jail or prison, all communication is controlled for security reasons. Facilities have to monitor who inmates talk to, what is being said, and how often. That is why everything goes through approved systems like phone providers, video visitation apps, mail, or messaging platforms.

Here is why you cannot just talk to him directly:

  • All calls must be monitored or recorded
  • Numbers have to be approved in advance
  • Inmates cannot receive incoming calls
  • Facilities use contracted companies to manage communication

The “app” you are talking about is likely the jail’s video visitation or messaging system. It is not meant to replace real contact, but it is one of the few controlled ways they allow communication.

It is not about keeping you apart personally. It is about the facility maintaining control and tracking all interactions.

Your main options to stay connected are:

  • Phone calls, once your number is approved and funded
  • Video visits through the facility’s system
  • Letters, which are still the most reliable and least restricted form of communication

If phone access has not been set up yet, that is usually the next step. Once he adds your number and the account is funded through the facility’s provider, he should be able to call you directly.

Until then, sending letters through InmateAid can help keep communication going without relying on the app alone.
