In most cases, someone who has been convicted and is in federal custody should appear in the Bureau of Prisons locator, even after release. So if they are not showing up at all, there are a few possible explanations.

One possibility is that they are not actually in BOP custody yet. After a federal conviction, inmates are often held by the U.S. Marshals Service while awaiting designation to a federal prison. During that time, they will not appear in the BOP system.

Another possibility is that they were released and the information is not coming up due to a name mismatch or incorrect search details. Even small differences in spelling can cause the search to return nothing.

In rarer situations, inmates will not appear in the locator for security reasons. This can happen if they are in protective custody under special conditions or part of a witness protection type situation. In those cases, their information is intentionally not made public.

There is also the chance that the case is not federal custody at all. Some cases are handled in federal court but the inmate is housed in a state or local facility, which would not show up in the BOP locator.

If you are certain about the conviction and still cannot find them, the best next steps are:

  • Double check the spelling of their name and any aliases
  • Contact the U.S. Marshals Service for the district
  • Check with the Clerk of Court for custody status

Most of the time, it comes down to them not being fully processed into the BOP system yet or being held under a different authority.
