Yes, almost certainly. Fingerprints do not lie and they do not forget.

When someone is booked into a jail or prison, their fingerprints are run through databases that law enforcement agencies have been building for decades. The two primary systems are the FBI's Next Generation Identification system and state-level AFIS databases, which stands for Automated Fingerprint Identification System. If that person has ever been fingerprinted before, for any reason, including a prior arrest, military service, a government job, or even certain professional licenses, their prints are already in the system tied to their real identity.

The moment those prints come back with a match, the fake name falls apart. Officers know immediately who they are actually dealing with and the attempt to conceal identity becomes its own problem on top of whatever the original charge was.

Giving a false name to law enforcement is a separate criminal offense in virtually every state. It can be charged as obstruction, providing false information to police, or identity fraud, depending on the jurisdiction. That charge gets added to whatever else is already on the table and does not help anyone's position when they eventually stand in front of a judge.

The only scenario where fingerprints might not immediately surface a real identity is if the person has truly never been printed before in any system anywhere. That is increasingly rare given how many touchpoints modern life has with fingerprint collection, but it is possible for very young first-time offenders with no prior government contact.

For anyone thinking a fake name buys them time or protection, the math seldom works out in their favor.
