Will inmates know to call me after I sign up?

I am trying to get in contact with someone and I saw the discount telephone thing. Will the inmate know to call me if I sign up for it?

No, the inmate will not automatically know to call you just because you signed up for the discount phone service.

When you sign up, you will be given a new local number, but it is up to you to get that number to the inmate. Facilities do not pass along phone numbers or messages on your behalf.

Here is what you need to do:

  • Send the new number to the inmate in a letter
  • Make sure they clearly understand that this is the number they should add and call
  • Once they receive it, they will add it to their approved call list

After the number is approved, they can start calling it, and it will ring on your phone like normal.

The easiest way to get the number to them is by sending a letter through InmateAid. Sometimes a coupon is available to help you send that first message.

So the key point is:

  • Signing up does not notify the inmate
  • You must send them the number
  • They must add and get it approved before calling

Once that is done, everything works normally and you can start receiving calls.
