The Albany County NY Correctional Facility is a detention center located at 840 Albany Shaker Rd Albany, NY which is operated locally by the Albany County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Albany County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Albany Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

Albany County NY Correctional Facility - Visitation

The Albany County Correctional Facility constructed in 1931, is located on Albany Shaker Road in the Town of Colonie, provides detention for arrested individuals as ordered by the courts within the County. These Courts include Local Justice Courts, Superior Courts and Federal Courts.

The Correctional Facility is one of the largest County Correctional Facilities in the State of New York. The Facility has a maximum of 1043 beds, providing custody for local, state and federal prisoners. The current staff of 420 for both sworn officers and civilians maintains the day-to-day operations of the Facility. During the past year, over 7000 prisoners were admitted to the Facility. The average daily population has exceeded 800 inmates over the past year.

Inmate Services Unit

The Inmate Services Unit implements, coordinates, and monitors facility programs. By utilizing facility programs and community resources, Inmate Service Unit Staff attempt where appropriate, to encourage change in the inmate's lifestyle in effort to promote self-awareness, elevate morale, stimulate intellect, maintain/elevate dignity and prevent recidivism.

Inmate Service Unit Staff conduct intake interviews with newly admitted inmates. The intake interview extracts personal and family background, criminal and incarceration history, alcohol/other drug use, as well as medical and mental health concerns. The findings of the intake interview assist Inmate Service Unit Staff in developing an initial course of strategy toward appropriate inmate interaction and program recommendations.

A Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor is on staff to conduct alcohol/other drug assessments, assist with inmate diversions to community treatment programs, facilitate community reintegration for the county sentenced inmate, and assist in coordination of self-help meetings and the Intensive Corrections Addictions Residential Education Program.

Facility Clergy are available to lead weekly religious services, visit inmate housing units, conduct individual consultations and work with inmate families/significant others.

* You must clear the metal detector to enter the visiting room (It is strongly suggested you wear sneakers.)
*You will need medical documentation for all medical devices on your person.
* You may be required to submit to a K-9 search
* You must dress appropriately – NO see through Clothing, hats, scarves, hoods or overly alluring, suggesting or revealing clothing.

The final decision as to the appropriateness of dress lies with the supervisor assigned to the visit area.

All visitors are subject to the facility’s rules and regulations. Violation of such could result in termination of, or denial of, a visit. All visitors must pass through a scanner. Failure to properly clear scanner will result in denial of entry. The only item that may be in the possession of a visitor is the facility locker key. No other items allowed beyond the lobby area.

NOTHING MAY BE GIVEN TO AN INMATE DURING A VISIT.

IDENTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: ALL VISITORS must present proper identification in order to visit an inmate. Such identification must include visitor's name, address, photograph, date of birth, and signature. Acceptable forms of ID: Valid driver’s license, or non-driver ID, U.S. Armed Services ID, or passport. Visitors under the age of 18 must have their birth certificate and be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. If not, the accompanying adult must possess a notarized letter from the parent or legal guardian authorizing such a visit. The letter must include the parent or legal guardian's name, address, and telephone number, the reason for the visit, the date and time of such visit, and the name of the inmate to be visited.
