While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate.

GCCC incarcerates 1,536 state-sentenced inmates with medium-security classification, comprising 1,280 beds for general housing and the remainder allocated for medical, punitive segregation, administrative segregation, and special management, including intake. Spanning five buildings across 435,000 square feet, the facility occupies a cleared perimeter of 90 acres within a 330-acre site. With a fully operational capacity, the prison employs a staff of up to 345.

Operating as a state Level II facility under the oversight of the Alaska DOC, GCCC prioritizes public safety by securely housing male sentenced and un-sentenced prisoners across minimum, medium, and Administrative Segregation, ensuring supervision commensurate with their custody classification.

Maintaining a secure, safe, and healthy environment, GCCC adheres to American Correctional Association (ACA) Standards for Adult Local Detention Facilities.
