Draper Correctional Center, situated in Elmore County, Alabama, is a medium custody state prison overseen by the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC). Housing a total of 1232 inmates, the facility accommodates both male and female prisoners, albeit in separate dormitory settings. Established in 1939, Draper Correctional Center originally had a capacity of 600 beds and replaced the former Speigner Reformatory, which had been founded around 1900. Speigner Reformatory operated various work programs, including farming and a cotton mill, until it was destroyed by fire in November 1932.

Draper Correctional Center continues to operate a farming operation and a furniture plant, providing vocational training and employment opportunities for inmates. Each prisoner is assigned a job within the facility, contributing to maintenance and various other tasks. The prison is named after Hamp Draper, who served as the director of the state corrections department at the time of its establishment.

Elmore County is home to three Alabama state prisons, with Draper Correctional Center being one of them. Staton Correctional Facility is located adjacent to Draper, while Elmore Correctional Facility is situated about a mile to the east. Together, these facilities play a crucial role in the state's corrections system, providing secure housing for inmates and offering various programs aimed at rehabilitation and reintegration.
