Alaska is one of the simplest states in this series for phone calls. The Alaska Department of Corrections (Alaska DOC) operates a single unified corrections system covering all facilities statewide, from pretrial detention to long-term incarceration. There are no separate county jails in Alaska. Every person in state custody is held in an Alaska DOC facility under one statewide phone contract with Securus Technologies.
That means one vendor, one rate, one setup process, and one set of rules regardless of which Alaska facility your loved one is in.
Alaska DOC uses "inmates" and "offenders" in its materials.
THE ALASKA DOC PHONE SYSTEM
The Alaska Department of Corrections contracts with Securus Technologies for all telephone services at all facilities statewide.
How Alaska DOC phone calls work
Inmates place outgoing calls only. You cannot call into the facility to speak with an inmate. The inmate initiates every call from a facility phone. When a call connects, you will hear a pre-recorded message identifying the facility and the inmate. You then accept or decline.
A billing account must be established with Securus before you can receive calls. Two account types are available:
AdvanceConnect (prepaid): You fund an account in advance. When the inmate calls, charges are deducted automatically from your prepaid balance. This is the most common option and requires no credit check.
Direct Bill: Charges are billed directly to you monthly through Securus Correctional Billing Services. A credit check is required.
Setting up an account
Online: securustech.net/phone-services
Phone: 1-800-844-6591 (Securus customer service)
You will need the inmate's name and facility to link your account correctly.
All calls are recorded and monitored except properly verified attorney calls.
Rates (effective January 1, 2026)
$0.085 per minute - all call types (local, intrastate, and interstate).
There are no connection fees or ancillary fees. Taxes are additional and applied as required by law.
This is well below the FCC's 2025 IPCS Order ceiling of $0.12/min for large prisons (effective April 6, 2026), so no compliance adjustment is needed at Alaska's current rate.
Free calls
Effective February 1, 2026, every Alaska DOC inmate receives two free calls per month. The free call credits are applied to the inmate's Securus account on the first day of each month. The first two calls placed that month are free.
Important details about the free calls:
- Free calls can be made to any domestic phone number
- The called party does not need a Securus account to receive the free calls
- Free calls cannot be saved up or transferred to the following month
- Only the first two calls of the month are free; subsequent calls are billed at $0.085/min
Legal calls - attorney information
Attorney calls are not recorded or monitored, but attorneys must take an active step to set this up. Attorneys who have registered a number with Securus must also notify Alaska DOC directly to have that number set as private.
To set up attorney call privacy, email DOC.Securus@alaska.gov with:
- Name, address, and contact information for the attorney on the account
- Alaska Bar Association number
- The phone number(s) registered with Securus
Alaska DOC will follow up by phone or email once the number has been verified and set as private.
General questions for attorneys regarding Securus can also be sent to DOC.Securus@alaska.gov.
Alaska DOC facilities
Alaska has 13 state corrections facilities. All use the same Securus phone system and the same statewide rate:
Anchorage Correctional Complex (ACC) - Anchorage
Anvil Mountain Correctional Center - Nome
Fairbanks Correctional Center - Fairbanks
Goose Creek Correctional Center - Wasilla
Hiland Mountain Correctional Center - Eagle River (women's facility)
Ketchikan Correctional Center - Ketchikan
Lemon Creek Correctional Center - Juneau
Mat-Su Pretrial Facility - Palmer
Palmer Correctional Center - Sutton
Point MacKenzie Correctional Farm - Point MacKenzie
Spring Creek Correctional Center - Seward
Wildwood Correctional Complex - Kenai
Yukon-Kuskokwim Correctional Center - Bethel
To confirm which facility an inmate is in: Alaska Offender Search at vinelink.com or by contacting Alaska DOC directly.
A note on Alaska geography
Several Alaska facilities serve remote regions where family members may be hundreds of miles away with no road access. Phone calls are often the primary means of contact for families separated by the state's geography. The free call program and the $0.085/min rate are meaningful in this context.
For families of inmates at Anvil Mountain (Nome), Yukon-Kuskokwim (Bethel), or other bush region facilities, the statewide rate applies regardless of distance.
No county jails
Unlike the lower 48, Alaska has no county-level jail system. Borough governments in Alaska do not operate independent jails the way county sheriffs do in other states. All incarceration is handled by the Alaska DOC. There is no separate municipal or borough phone system to navigate. The Securus account you set up for an Alaska DOC inmate will work at any facility in the state.
Note: A small number of municipal or borough holding facilities exist for short-term pre-booking detention, but sentenced and charged individuals in state custody are held at Alaska DOC facilities.
What to do before the first call
1. Find out which Alaska DOC facility your loved one is in - contact Alaska DOC at 907-334-2381 or check vinelink.com
2. Set up a Securus account at securustech.net/phone-services or by calling 1-800-844-6591
3. Fund your AdvanceConnect account (or request Direct Bill service)
4. Confirm with the inmate that your phone number is on their approved call list
5. Wait for the inmate to initiate the call
For the two free monthly calls, the called party does not need a Securus account. However, the inmate still needs your number on their approved list.
