Located at 6911 N BDI Blvd in Douglas, AZ, ADCRR-Douglas carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. ADCRR-Douglas offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.
The Arizona Department of Corrections Rehabilitation & Reentry (ADCRR) – Douglas facility is among the 13 state prison facilities operated by the State. Douglas is situated adjacent to the Bisbee-Douglas Airport in Cochise County, approximately 250 miles southeast of Phoenix, the state capital. Originally established as the Cochise Correctional Training Facility in the early months of 1984, ADCRR-Douglas with an inmate capacity of approximately 2,148 across units ranging from security levels minimum to high, ADCRR-Douglas utilizes a score classification system to determine suitable custody and security level placements for inmates. The facility is equipped to handle medium to high-security needs. ADCRR-Douglas comprises five units (custody level 1-5): Gila(2), Eggers (2), Mohave (3), Papago DUI (2), and the Complex Detention (5).
The construction process involved inmate assistance, with the Maricopa and Mohave units being the first to become operational. Due to prison overcrowding, the Gila unit was constructed using portable modular housing. Subsequently, the Papago Unit was acquired from the Desert Inn Motel Company and converted into a prison unit to address the housing needs of DUI inmates, as per a law passed in 1984. Papago was closed in 2017 only to reopen in 2020 to house 240 short-term female inmates. Additionally, a special Detention unit was established to cater to specific requirements for inmates who haven't been able to adhere to the rules of incarceration.
The facility offers various programs and opportunities for inmates' rehabilitation and self-improvement. Work crews, including those from Arizona Correctional Industries and Intergovernmental Agreement assignments, engage in tasks within the local and surrounding communities, as well as on institutional grounds. Educational programs such as Adult Basic Education (ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and General Equivalency Diploma (GED) attainment are provided, along with work-based education programs in collaboration with Pima Community College.
Treatment and self-improvement programs include Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Moderate Treatment for Substance Abuse, and initiatives focused on cognitive restructuring and cultural diversity. Additionally, inmates are encouraged to participate in reentry programs, peer-to-peer training, and various art and vocational classes to enhance their skills and prepare for successful reintegration into society.
Additional crews provided by Douglas include Wildland Fire Crew, ACI (which includes producing inmate clothing that is used throughout the state and year-round and seasonal inmate employment with Fiesta Canning, Inc. and Southeast Arizona Medical Center). Employed inmates work an average of six hours per day, five days per week.
ADCRR-Douglas maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
Visitation hours are identical for all ASPC-Douglas Units 8:00 a.m. to 4:00* p.m.
Sunday: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00* p.m.
Holiday visits: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00* p.m.
*Visitors will not be processed to visit after 3:00 pm on any visitation day.
Complex Detention Unit (CDU) non-contact visitation hours are by scheduled appointment. Visitation hours are scheduled on or before the Monday before visitation.
