The Arizona Department of Corrections (ADCRR)-Perryville stands as one of 13 prison facilities operated by the State, holding a rich history of transformation and service. Originally housing both male and female inmates, the Perryville Complex saw its evolution into an all-female facility in 2000. The complex comprises various units, including the Lumley Unit, Santa Cruz Unit, San Carlos Unit, and Santa Rosa/Piestewa Units, accommodating individuals across different security levels, from minimum to close custody offenders. Notably, the Lumley Unit houses the female death row. The other units are the Complex Detention, San Pedro Unit, Santa Maria Unit, Special Management, and the Women's Treatment Unit.

With a maximum population capacity of 4,401 inmates, the Perryville complex offers a wide array of programs aimed at rehabilitation and education. These include education, substance abuse treatment, mental health programs, transition assistance, religious services, and family reunification events. The institution utilizes a score classification system to assess inmates' appropriate custody and security level placement, ensuring tailored interventions based on individual needs and risks.

Work opportunities are abundant within the Perryville Complex, providing inmates with marketable job skills and good work habits. Various businesses operate within the complex, producing goods and services for stakeholders. Inmates engage in activities ranging from agricultural work at Hickman’s Egg ranch to employment in food service, maintenance crews, plumbing, library services, and more. Notably, the complex's Garment Factory contributes to cost-saving measures by manufacturing inmate garments, while Televerde call centers generate revenues benefiting the State of Arizona. Additionally, inmates contribute to community services such as firefighting and transportation departments.

Education is a cornerstone of rehabilitation within Perryville, with all units offering functional literacy, high school, GED, college, and university programs. Opportunities for degree attainment span from certificates in various fields to associate and bachelor's degrees. Treatment and self-improvement programs, including Convergent Case Management, Changing Offender Behavior, Parenting, Conflict Resolution, Women in Recovery, and Art programs, are also offered across all units. The Second Chance Center, housed within the Santa Rosa and Piestewa units, assists soon-to-be-released inmates in preparing for successful reintegration into society, with partnerships with the Department of Economic Security facilitating employment connections upon release.

Perryville Complex has been home to several notable prisoners, including Jodi Arias, Marissa DeVault, Marjorie Orbin, and Pamela Anne Phillips, each serving sentences for high-profile crimes. Despite its history and challenges, Perryville remains committed to its mission of rehabilitation, offering hope and opportunities for transformation to those within its walls.
