ASPC-Yuma, a contemporary medium-security prison, stands as a vital component among the 13 prison facilities under the ADCRR's purview. Situated in Yuma County, this complex plays a pivotal role in accommodating an average population of 4,100 convicted male felons across various custody levels, including minimum, medium, and high security. Tasked with providing security, education, and recreational programs for its inmates, ASPC-Yuma ensures top-tier security for the public, employees, and incarcerated individuals. Moreover, serving as a major employer in the Yuma County area, the institution boasts a workforce of 960 full-time employees and offers an inmate work program utilized by local state and community organizations.

Construction for the Cheyenne Unit commenced in June 1995, employing both commercial and inmate labor. By September 1996, the Cheyenne Unit, operating as a level three (medium custody) facility, was fully operational. Subsequently, the Dakota Unit began construction in June 1997, relying solely on commercial labor, with an anticipated opening in September 1998, functioning as a level four (maximum custody) unit.

Work Programs at ASPC-Yuma are facilitated through the Work Incentive Pay Plan (WIPP), providing inmates with opportunities for meaningful employment while addressing their needs. Positions available include those contracted through Arizona Correctional Industries, Wild Land Fire Crew, kitchen roles, groundskeepers, and janitorial positions, contingent upon the inmate's skill level, education, and security classification. Both full-time and part-time positions are accessible.

Education Programs at ASPC-Yuma cater to inmates' academic needs, offering Adult Basic Education classes for those below the Literacy Standard and a high school education program for non-graduates. Vocational education, contracted through a local community college, provides instruction in trades such as carpentry, masonry, and plumbing. Additionally, higher education opportunities are available through correspondence courses at the inmate's own expense.

Treatment Programs at the institution, overseen by ADC programs staff or external facilitators, encompass various areas such as substance abuse, financial management, re-entry preparation, parenting skills, and mental wellness. These programs aim to support inmates' rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society upon release.

Encouraging community involvement, Yuma-Cheyenne promotes inmate participation in Volunteer Programs, facilitating fundraising initiatives for victims' services and community projects. Inmates, alongside staff, actively participate in coordinating these efforts, donating significant funds and labor hours to designated agencies and organizations.

Recreational Programs at ADCRR-Yuma provide inmates with opportunities for both outdoor and indoor activities, including sports such as softball, basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, and various track and field events, contingent upon the inmate's security classification level. Indoor activities encompass a variety of board and card games, all supervised and monitored by staff. Additionally, in-house hobby crafts such as arts and crafts, drawing, painting, bead crafts, and plastic model kits are available, tailored to inmates' security classifications.
