The North Central Unit, a medium-minimum security state prison facility, is located adjacent to the Calico Rock-Izard County Airfield, and is operated by the Arkansas Department of Corrections (AR DOC). With a capacity to house 800 inmates, the facility offers various programs aimed at rehabilitation and skill-building.
Inmates at the North Central Unit have the opportunity to participate in educational programs, including basic adult education and programs facilitating the attainment of a GED. A pre-release program is available to assist inmates in preparing for their release, providing them with foundational opportunities for post-custody life.
The facility also engages in maintenance work on the grounds of various locations in the region, providing inmates with vocational training and practical experience. Additionally, the North Central Unit participates in the Paws in Prison program, allowing inmates to work with animals, and offers a gardening program that teaches the basics of plant cultivation.
Operational activities at the North Central Unit include agriculture initiatives such as vegetable gardening, forage production, apple orchards, and equine operations. Other programs and services offered include the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Program, Anger Management, Canine Unit, Faith-Based Principles and Applications for Life (PAL) Program, Regional Maintenance, the Story Book Project, Substance Abuse Education, the Think Legacy Program, and Vocational-Technical (Vo-Tech) programs. These programs aim to support inmate rehabilitation, education, and personal growth.
