The ADCRR-Lewis Buckley facility serves as one of the 8 inner prison units, accommodating a diverse mix of low, medium, and high-security inmates sentenced in State Court for durations exceeding one year. Constructed through a collaborative effort involving commercial and convict labor, ADCRR-Lewis-Buckley stands as a modern facility within the entire complex, boasting a capacity of over 5,000 inmates.
Work crews play a vital role in the facility's operations, engaging in various assignments spanning industries and community projects facilitated by Arizona Correctional Industries and Intergovernmental Agreements. These crews undertake diverse tasks, including agricultural work at Hickman’s Egg Farm and manufacturing activities at Playcraft Trailers. Additionally, inmates contribute to food service, building maintenance, vehicle upkeep, and general labor efforts aimed at maintaining institutional grounds.
Regularly dispatched within local and surrounding communities, including Phoenix and Tonopah, as well as within the Lewis Complex itself, Lewis work crews fulfill critical roles in community projects and emergency response efforts, with designated Fire Crews handling firefighting and related tasks.
In terms of education, the Education Department at ADCRR-Lewis offers a comprehensive array of programs tailored to meet inmates' diverse needs. Special education, mandatory literacy, GED preparation, and vocational training opportunities are provided. Alternative instructional methods such as direct instruction, video/closed circuit instruction, and computer-assisted learning are available for inmates unable to participate in traditional classroom settings due to health or safety concerns. Additionally, inmates may opt for college-level correspondence courses, with onsite education staff providing support and proctoring examinations.
