When someone you care about gets locked up, it's tough to figure out all the ins and outs of jail life. From sending mail to visiting, there are a lot of things to sort out. And getting info about the arrest? Not always easy. That's where this webpage comes in handy. It's here to help you get a handle on how things work at Broward County Sheriff's Main Jail Bureau so you can stay connected and support your loved one behind bars.

The Broward Main Jail is a detention center located at 555 SE 1st Ave Ft. Lauderdale, FL which is operated locally by the Broward County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Broward County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Ft. Lauderdale Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals. You can see all the arrest records for Florida here.

The Main Jail, located adjacent to the Broward County Courthouse in downtown Fort Lauderdale, stands as an eight-story maximum security facility. Originally accommodating 864 local and state inmates, its capacity was expanded to 1,538 inmates. Over 400 sworn and civilian staff oversee operations, including the Central Intake Bureau (Booking), pre-magistrate hearings, Centralized Classification Intake assessment, an infirmary, and administrative offices.

Primarily housing male inmates awaiting trial or serving short sentences, the Main Jail harbors individuals deemed escape risks, violent, dangerous, or necessitating maximum security housing due to the nature of their charges. Moreover, it accommodates around 65 juveniles awaiting trial in adult courts, housed separately from adult inmates. Inmate housing assignments are based on objective criteria, ensuring placement in the least restrictive and safest unit. Assignments prioritize meeting inmates' needs over proximity to their homes.

In terms of inmate activities, services, and programs, inmates have access to television, reading material, and outdoor recreation, weather permitting. The Department of Detention & Community Programs offers a range of services, from education to mental health counseling, aimed at rehabilitation and reintegration into society. Please read the latest information on BSO's policy of recording outgoing inmate telephone calls.

Upon arrest, individuals undergo property intake, medical screening, fingerprinting, photographing, and warrants check at Broward Sheriff's Office Central Intake Bureau. The time required for processing depends on various factors, including the volume of arrestees. Arrestees not bonded out appear before a magistrate judge the day following their arrest, where bond amounts may be set or guilty pleas accepted for misdemeanor cases. Housing assignments, again based on objective criteria, determine placement in one of four BSO jails.

Inmate property can be released to family or friends upon completion of a property voucher, with pickup available seven days a week. Incoming mail, delivered Monday through Friday, undergoes inspection for security threats and contraband. For legal mail, only inmates can open letters in their presence. Accepted items include letters and cards, while prohibited items include money, checks, and certain objects posing security risks.
