Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Cayuga County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Auburn Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is proud to have the opportunity to provide the services of four Inmate Work Crews; three working throughout the week, one on the weekends.

Program Goals - Supervised by a staff of Custody Officers, crews of qualifying inmates perform various improvement and clean-up projects to the local municipalities and not-for-profit organizations within Cayuga County. It was the intent of the Sheriff’s Office to provide this program to make the neighborhoods safer, better places to live and to help reduce the cost of operating government.

The program additionally allows for participating inmates to pay something back to the community, showcase their talents and instill in them a feeling of self-worth that will hopefully remain with them upon their release and lead to their becoming productive, law-abiding citizens.

Inmate communication - Inmates are currently allowed to receive letters, make collect calls, and receive visitation. The facility does not take messages for inmates.
