Oak Glen Camp #35, operated jointly by CDCR and CAL FIRE, plays a crucial role in emergency response efforts and community projects. Located in the picturesque San Bernardino Mountains near Oak Glen, the camp sits on 27 acres of leased Forest Service land within the San Bernardino National Forest, surrounded by the natural beauty of the San Gorgonio Wilderness area.
Established in 1945 as a tent camp, Oak Glen Conservation Camp has a rich history of providing manpower for various agencies. Initially operated by CDCR, the camp transitioned through different management entities before CDCR inmates replaced the Youth Authority wards in 1990.
The camp's primary mission is to provide incarcerated hand crews for firefighting and emergency response. In addition to fire suppression duties, camp participants engage in conservation and community service projects as determined by CAL FIRE. Two specialized crews at Oak Glen focus on tree trimming and bug abatement, providing valuable services to the surrounding area.
Furthermore, Oak Glen camp operates a wood shop supervised by CAL FIRE staff, where participants create custom cabinetry. This vocational training equips them with valuable skills that can be utilized for employment opportunities upon their reentry into society.
Through its multifaceted activities and collaborations, Oak Glen Conservation Camp #35 remains dedicated to its mission of not only responding to emergencies but also contributing to conservation efforts and providing valuable vocational training to its participants.
