Washington Ridge Camp #44 is a minimum-security facility under CDCR supervision, this camp plays a crucial role in supporting government agencies during emergency responses to wildfires, floods, and other natural or man-made disasters. Additionally, camp crews contribute to park maintenance, assist with flood mitigation through sandbagging, and participate in reforestation projects. Participation in the Conservation (Fire) Camp Program is entirely voluntary for incarcerated individuals. Those who choose to volunteer must meet specific eligibility criteria aimed at ensuring public safety. These include avenues for criminal record expungement, creating new pathways for employment, and aiding in their successful reintegration into society.

When not engaged in firefighting efforts, incarcerated firefighters stationed at the camp dedicate their time to conservation and community service projects. These projects are determined by CAL FIRE and serve various purposes, including clearing local waterways of debris, fuel reduction in collaboration with Placer County Roads, Parks, and Recreation Departments, as well as habitat improvement initiatives in Tahoe National Parks and Yuba County Public Works areas.

Similar to other CDCR facilities, every conservation camp offers rehabilitative and educational services to its participants. These services include substance abuse programs such as Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous (AA/NA), religious programs, hobby craft activities, as well as GED and college courses. Engaging in these rehabilitative and educational activities not only enhances the skills and knowledge of camp participants but also fosters a sense of self-worth and responsibility.

The collective efforts of incarcerated individuals during emergencies not only contribute to public safety but also instill a strong work ethic and a sense of purpose. Ultimately, these activities play a crucial role in preparing camp participants for successful reintegration into their communities upon release, emphasizing the rehabilitative nature of the conservation camp program.
