Located at 285 Shaker Rd in Enfield, CT, Robinson CI carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. The CRCI stands as a level 3 medium-security facility, prioritizing rehabilitation and education for sentenced offenders within its confines. Named after Carl Robinson, the institution pays homage to his legacy as the first African American warden appointed in Connecticut, known for his service at the Somers State Prison and the Cheshire Reformatory.
Since its opening on November 8, 1985, the Robinson Correctional has been situated on the historic grounds of a Shaker farm community dating back to 1792. Over the years, it has evolved to accommodate changing needs and practices within the correctional system. In January of 1990, with the adoption of a new Inmate Objective Classification System, the facility's security level transitioned to medium-security, reflecting a nuanced approach to inmate management.
Programming at Robinson Correctional Institution is comprehensive, addressing various needs and interests of the inmate population. From intensive in-patient substance abuse treatment to a diverse array of educational and vocational offerings such as culinary arts, machine tooling, and small engine repair, the institution is committed to equipping inmates with valuable skills for successful reintegration into society.
Beyond its internal programming, the institution actively engages with the surrounding community through initiatives like the Town of Enfield Adopt A Spot program and various community service projects benefiting municipalities and non-profit organizations. Additionally, Robinson Correctional Institution supports local agencies by providing printing services for flyers and related materials, fostering a sense of partnership and contribution.
Throughout its history, the facility has undergone structural changes to adapt to evolving needs. Building 7, initially repurposed for use by the Judicial Department as a juvenile facility in 1996, was eventually returned to the institution's jurisdiction in 1997 to serve as a housing unit for outside clearance inmates. Despite its subsequent closure in 2008, these adjustments reflect the institution's ongoing commitment to operational flexibility and responsiveness to changing circumstances.
With a present staffing complement of 311 dedicated professionals, the Carl Robinson Correctional Institution continues its mission to provide a secure environment conducive to rehabilitation and personal growth, honoring its namesake's legacy while striving for excellence in service to the community and the incarcerated population alike.
Robinson CI maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.

Visits are scheduled according to the inmate's housing location. If an inmate moves to another housing location, the visit will be canceled and needs to be rescheduled. It is the inmate’s responsibility to notify the visitor that their visit will need to be rescheduled. Any individual who attempts to visit a facility without a pre-scheduled, confirmed appointment will not be accommodated.
