When someone you care about gets locked up, it's tough to figure out all the ins and outs of jail life. From sending mail to visiting, there are a lot of things to sort out. And getting info about the arrest? Not always easy. That's where this webpage comes in handy. It's here to help you get a handle on how things work at Dane County Jail System - City-County Jail so you can stay connected and support your loved one behind bars.
The City-County Jail is a detention center located at 210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd Madison, WI which is operated locally by the Dane County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Dane County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Madison Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals. You can see all the arrest records for Wisconsin here.
The Dane County Sheriff's Office operates three jail facilities, each serving different security needs and purposes:
1. **City-County Building Jail**: This facility houses maximum-security prisoners who are either awaiting trial or do not have work release privileges on their sentences.
2. **Public Safety Building Jail**: Located at 115 West Doty Street, Madison, WI, this jail houses medium-security prisoners as well as those sentenced to jail with work release privileges. It also contains the booking facility for processing new prisoners into the jail and is the centralized location for releases from the jail facilities. All property, financial, and administrative offices are located at this facility.
3. **William H. Ferris Center**: Situated at 2120 Rimrock Road, Madison, WI, near the Coliseum and Exposition Center, this facility houses minimum-security prisoners who are sentenced with work release privileges. It also houses the administrative office for electronic release programs.
For individuals sentenced to the jail, the Court may grant Huber release privileges. Huber release allows individuals to leave the jail for specific approved activities such as employment, child/family care, school, or treatment. However, the program has strict rules, and all activities must be verified and approved by jail staff. Failure to follow the rules may affect one's ability to exercise Huber privileges.
Upon reporting to the jail, inmates will receive a Jail Inmate Handbook containing the jail rules, including rules specific to Huber release. Compliance with these rules is essential, as failure to do so may result in discipline and affect one's ability to exercise Huber release privileges.
Regarding personal belongings, inmates are limited in what they can bring into the jail due to limited storage space. Items such as duffle bags, luggage, or electronic devices are not allowed. The jail will issue limited items upon arrival, and inmates may bring additional approved personal items in a disposable bag. All items are subject to approval by medical staff and/or jail administration.
Additional items, including hygiene items, can be purchased from the commissary once an inmate has been classified and assigned to a housing unit. Indigent inmates will have access to hygiene items. Requests for additional personal property drop-offs must be approved by jail staff.
For individuals interested in participating in a Jail Diversion Program, they can contact (608) 266-9089 for more information.
