El Centro Service Processing Center-GEO operates as a CLOSED facility in El Centro, CA, under contracts with California DOC, Federal Bureau of Prisons, and US Marshal Service. It accommodates inmates from various jurisdictions, categorized by custody level, including work release residents seeking reentry success. Emphasizing inmate rehabilitation, ECSPC offers robust educational and vocational programs. Onsite services cover dietary, health, fitness, education, religious practices, and entertainment. The facility upholds high standards for government contracts through regular inspections, vital for its continued operation.

El Centro Detention Facility, operated by GEO Group, now only offers comprehensive services on behalf of the U.S. Marshals Service. These services include housing, security, transportation, medical care, food provision, and various other support services.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in El Centro closed its doors OCT 2014, as detainees were moved into a larger, newly constructed facility, the Imperial Regional Detention Center (IRDF) in Calexico, CA.

The IRDF is expected to house up to 780 detainees — or 320 more people than El Centro's capacity. It also will house men and women. The former facility only housed men.

The detention center on North Imperial Avenue — along with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection processing facility in El Centro — became a focal point of a heated national debate in July, when officials began transferring busloads of undocumented immigrants detained along the Texas border to stations in Southern California.
