The Essex Co Jail is a detention center located at 354 Doremus Ave Newark, NJ which is operated locally by the Essex County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Essex County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Newark Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. The Essex County Department of Corrections has achieved notable success, boasting a 100% compliance rating from the New Jersey Department of Corrections' Bureau of County Services between 2007 and 2010. Additionally, the department holds accreditations from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) and certification from the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). In 2007, administrative oversight of the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center in Newark, NJ, was assumed by the department.
While there are no restrictions on the length, language, or content of inmate letters, exceptions are made in cases where there is a clear threat to the institution's security. Incoming mail and parcels are subject to examination by correctional facility officials to detect cash, checks, money orders, or contraband, although such correspondence is not read unless it poses a threat to institutional security or is used for illicit activities.
Inmates are permitted to receive soft-covered books, magazines, newspapers, and other printed materials mailed directly from publishers or reputable bookstores. Additionally, individuals seeking to transfer funds to a commissary account or add money to an inmate's phone account may do so through the website www.offenderConnect.com, which offers 24-hour access for transactions.

Visitation is available:
Adult visitors must present a valid, verifiable government-issued identification card to enter the facility.
Minors who are visiting the facility must be accompanied by an adult guardian (18 years or older). Minors must not be left unaccompanied in the waiting room, visiting room or any other area.
Legal representatives of detainees are authorized to visit their clients during the following hours:
Attorneys and/or paralegals may visit detainees seven days a week from 7 AM until 7 PM, including holidays.
A list of pro bono (free) legal organizations will be posted in all detainee housing units and other appropriate areas. This list shall be updated quarterly. If a detainee wishes to see a representative or paralegal from that organization, it is the detainee’s responsibility to contact them for an appointment.
Consular officials may meet with their detained nationals at any time. It is requested that prior arrangements be made with the ICE Supervisory Deportation Officer to the extent possible and that consular officials bring appropriate credentials when they come to the facility. Clergy may visit detainees at any time but must make prior arrangements with the Chaplain’s Office.
All individuals requesting admittance to the facility or the visitation area are subject to a pat-down search of their person, an inspection of their belongings, and a metal scan search. Individuals refusing to cooperate with a reasonable search will not be admitted. No firearms or weapons of any kind are permitted. No electronic devices (cell phones, pagers, radios, etc.) are permitted in the secure areas of this facility.
